Anchored in the rock and floating on the island: the new footbridge over the Aare between Bremgarten and the Zehendermätteli turns the asymmetry of the landscape into a clear structural gesture.
On the Bremgarten side the structure is anchored in the rock; on the Zehendermätteli the footbridge merely rests. Two gentle curves shape the longitudinal section: the concave line takes the tension, the convex one follows the compression zone of the closed steel box. Together they trace the bending-moment diagram; at midstream, where the moment is zero, they cross and the bridge is at its most slender. Tension bars of solid steel sections continue the tradition of Bern's chain bridges, the Altenbergsteg (1857) and the Schönausteg (1906). Towards the middle they drop below the handrail and the view over the Aare opens completely, where a slight lens-shaped widening of the deck invites people to pause. The weathering steel needs no coating and can be fully recycled at the end of its life.
